Tourism leaders meet with President Obama to discuss industry concerns

President Barack Obama met Wednesday with major tourism leaders including Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Jay Rasulo, Busch Entertainment Corp. Chief Operating Officer Jim Atchison and Universal Parks and Resorts Chief EO Tom Williams.

The meeting focused on two areas, according to the U.S. Travel Association.  The topics included attracting more international visitors to the U.S. and the industry’s concern about a nationwide downturn in meetings and events.

<br />Roger Dow, president and chief executive officer of the U.S. Travel Association, called President Obama “an ally” who “recognizes the power of travel to strengthen America's economy.”  In the meeting, industry leaders urged President Obama to support the Travel Promotion Act, which would establish the first-ever U.S. promotion and communications campaign aimed at attracting international visitors.

Today was beautiful. I ran like 932840923 errands and sucked in the gorgeous warm air. I still miss my camera. I saw pictures everywhere. As I walked across the bridge, everything suddenly looked like a picture. The sun was low and the light was just right. And there were these kids by the train tracks with their alaskan malamute, and it just looked like such an amazing picture! I tried to take one with my phone, but it certainly was not the same.

Well blah blah! I have so much work to do. I thought I got plenty of sleep yesterday but I'm exhausted right now, so exhausted I'm dizzy and keep knocking things over. But there's no time for sleep, not uh! I've gotta work work work. I can do this. I can beat myself up this week and sleep on friday. It'll be fine. So I'm gonna keep working. Bye byes.

Better than I thought

wishweaver had plans for today, so I took over getting the daughter-unit around to her appointments. Took over is the correct word. She let me sleep in a bit this morning and took D-U to her vision therapy session. I met them there and she went to learn how to do beading with some friends from work.

After D-U's session, we went over to a local coffee house and snagged warm drinks and a good apple crisp. We picked up our anime discussion from last night over breakfast before I took her to her weekly group session.

Here's where the fun begins.

See, they meet once a week, so they try to schedule something every so often to do and this week, they were coming over to our house.

O.K., me . . . in a house . . . full of teenagers. *shudder*

It actually went well. They worked on a story they've been developing while I ordered pizza then they watched Spaceballs while said pizza disappeared like sand in a wind tunnel. They did some more writing and plotting on their project and it all wrapped up about 1600. By the time I ran them all home, Wish was home and things slowly began to settle back to normal.

I had hoped to get some of my own writing done earlier today, but *sigh* that didn't happen. I didn't get started on it until 1930, but I made up for lost time. I finished at 2230 tonight adding 2802 words to Shadows. I got on a roll and the words and descriptions just appeared on the page. Oh, if I could only bottle nights like this.

I do have to go into work tomorrow, and with the DST thing kicking off, it's going to hurt worse when I wake up in the morning than usual. So, with that, good night, LJ.

Eu acordei hj com apenas um pensamento: Vou fazer uma bolsa. Jα era tempo de superar essa crise e fazer algo que realmente me fizesse sentir bem. Retomar minha vida afinal...Entγo, uma bolsa.

Friend and friendship

Английском и Русском. По моему, это интересно смотреть смыслов слова которые опысивают разные связи в культуре, это скажет много о институциях общества.

I read a book about how certain words have different meanings across cultures. The author argues that you can say a lot about the culture through understanding those key words. An example she chose, is the word "friendship". On the meaning of "friendship" in US, she quotes a study:

"Personal relationships among Americans are numerous and are marked by friendli-  ness and informality; however, Americans rarely form deep and lasting friendships.  Friends and membership groups change easily as the American shifts status or locale;  consequently, his social life lacks both permanence and depth. (49)  The generalized "friend" of Americans, standing for anyone from a passing  acquaintance to a life-time'intimate, is maintained according to activities... But  these patterns of friendship among Americans ... do not imply a distrust of people.  They signify more often the American reluctance to becoming deeply involved with  other persons. In circumstances where a foreigner might turn to a friend for help,  support or solace, the American will tend to search for the professional, preferring  not to inconvenience his friends. (54)" *(Stewart, 1972:49-54 quoted in Wierzbicka, 1997:54)

And then, contrasting this to its meaning in russian:

"Their [the Russians'] social circles are usually narrower than those of Westerners,  especially Americans, who put such great stock in popularity, but relations between  Russians are usually more intense, more demanding, more enduring and often more  rewarding.  I knew of a couple sent off to Cuba for a two-year assignment, and another family  put up their teenage son in an already crowded two-room apartment. When Bella  Akhmadulina, the poet, married for the third time, she and her husband were broke,  and their friends bought them an entire apartment full of furniture. Let a dissident  intellectual get in trouble and real friends will loyally take the terrible political risk  of going to his rescue.. ..  They commit themselves to only a few, but cherish those. Within the trusted  circle, there is an intensity in Russian relationships that Westerners find both exhila-  rating and exhausting. When they finally open up, Russians are looking for a  soul-brother, not a mere conversational partner. They want someone to whom they  can pour out their hearts, share their miseries, tell about family problems or difficulties  with a lover or mistress, to ease the pain of life or to indulge in endless philosophical  windmill tilting. As a journalist I sometimes found it ticklish because Russians want  a total commitment from a friend.  (Smith 1976:108-110, cited in Wierzbicka, 1997:55)"

I think this is a great example of one aspect by which how US and European culture differ. I also like the idea that you can look on the meaning that people use in relation to words that describes relations more broadly to understand how the "options" in relation to relations between people. This is fascinating in relation to romantic relations, for example. The terms one use (like "dating", "lovers", "boyfriend" in American) say something about the institutional norms regarding that relation, and these norms differ from culture to culture.

This is a better alternative than what you were thinking before. Honestly, if it were anyone else, I'd find it fascinating. But since it's about me, I think it's cruel, it's unusual, but I know it's unavoidable.

Right now, I:
- Crave Starbucks or Jamba Juice -- oh no! My friends are all giving up stuff for lent and I sort of said I'd give up Starbucks (not for religious reasons, but just because it'd probably be good for me) :(
- Should upload pics from last night
- Should do Environmental Science homework
- Just bought candy that I did not want from five adorable kids who are going house-to-house -- cuteness is manipulative!

Prime time television, Simon Cowell, and what&#8217;s wrong with society

So, the entire Fox drama slate of television programs is based around Simon Cowell, the archetypical example of the poorly socially adjusted, mean, borderline asperger-type of personality.

24 is the story about turning Simon Cowell into a secret agent

House is about him as a doctor

Kitchen Confidential is about him as a chef

Lie to Me is about him as a behavioral psychologist

Terminator, I think, has him as Sarah Connor, but I’m not quite sure yet.

The whole plot resolves around this guy who is very good at what he does, but cannot relate to other people, and compensates by being uncaring and cruel. At some point during the hour, he may or may not have an insight and realize that he is doing it, compensates, but, in a very sitcom-ish fashion, does back to status quo the following week (because there wouldn’t be any worthwhile dynamic if he became well adjusted and a competent human being, of course)

In fact, the reasonably good shows that aren’t surviving, i.e., dollhouse, terminator, may be because this dynamic isn’t sufficiently brought to the forefront.

"Ok then, lets do your review..."

That's how the conversation started.  In the boardroom, 'Mary' and I sat down for my monthly review.  We talked about photocopying, NVQ, work etc and then she drops the bombshell.  'Jamie' the girl who went off on maternity leave nearly a year ago wants her job back.  Seeing as that is her right, we will have to let you go, or possibly you could do part time hours...

Yup, I was not amused.  At all.  In fact I outright panicked and walked out of the meeting room, saying I was going to leave right there and then.  I was followed by HR manager and 'Mary'.  HR manager talked to me, explaining that 'Jamie' had a legal right to walk back into her job and that due to the credit crunch the big boss (you remember him - the millionaire) needs to cut costs so is cutting staff.  She was nice, sympathetic and understanding.  I sat there shaking, crying and babbling that I couldn't afford to lose a job.  She got me some toilet roll to wipe my face with.  I was looking like Alice Cooper, mascara dripping off my chin and red as a beetroot.  Eventually I calmed down, and managed to speak coherently for a bit.  I said I needed time to think, and that my IBS had flared up, which it had, so they let me go home.  I have to decide what I am going to do.

I got home and told SImon, expecting him to totally freak out, but he was pretty cool about it.  He reckons part time is better than 'no time' so I will have to think long and hard over the weekend.  I applied for a few jobs ('few' being the word here - credit crunch=no jobs) and then we went out to the pub and had lunch and beer.

I am still in shock, and I think the alcohol is making me depressed now.

Hard not to freak about weight

So, I'm trying to eat crazy amounts of food. And it's probably because I'm continuing to eat so late at night, but (and I shouldn't have looked) my scale hit a number I've never wanted to see this morning.

I'm trying not to freak out about that since my size hasn't changed in TWO DAYS. In fact, I woke myself up early because I felt hungry for the first time in two weeks. And now I'm going to eat a banana with PB and not think about what my scale may or may not have to say about that.

I so shouldn't have looked.
